More than 1,500 dismissed police personnel on Monday appealed to the prime minister to facilitate their service return, alleging that the reinstatement process has stalled despite a Home Ministry order, a Police Headquarters review and earlier assurances that they would be reinstated.
The demand came during a human chain in front of the Jatiya Press Club, where representatives of the affected officers and employees said 1,522 members of the police force had either been dismissed or forced into retirement during the Awami League government`s tenure without fair departmental inquiries.
The protesters alleged that many honest and capable police personnel were removed from service for political reasons rather than proven misconduct, leaving hundreds of families without their livelihoods.
According to them, they sought justice from the interim government after the change in administration.
They claimed the Home Ministry later approved their reinstatement on humanitarian grounds, prompting Police Headquarters to form a 10-member high-level committee led by a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) to examine the cases.
The committee reportedly reviewed the matter for six months before submitting four recommendations.
They also said Police Headquarters` Media Cell announced on February 8, 2025, that the 1,522 dismissed personnel would soon be reinstated, creating hope among the affected officers and their families.
However, they alleged that no meaningful progress has been made despite the ministry`s directive, the committee`s recommendations and the public announcement.
The dismissed personnel also questioned the implementation of the review committee`s recommendations, claiming there were inconsistencies in the process.
According to them, although the committee recommended reinstating only those who had secured two favourable rulings from the Administrative Appellate Tribunal, some personnel with only one favourable verdict were later allowed to return to service.
Addressing the programme, former Sub-Inspector Mamun Sirajul Haque urged the prime minister to ensure implementation of both the Home Ministry`s reinstatement order and the Police Headquarters committee`s recommendations.
He expressed hope that doing so would allow the affected 1,522 families to regain their livelihoods while enabling the dismissed personnel to resume serving the country.
